Using Google To Jack Paid Fonts

As designers, we often become frustrated with the endless search of the “perfect font” for whatever the project may be. There are so many awesome fonts put out by Adobe and other companies but they come with a big price tag. I’m going to give a bit of information showing you how to use google to find pretty much any font you want, for free. However, I am not liable for your actions or what you choose do with this information. When you steal these fonts, your stealing from the designer who made them. BUY IT IF YOU LIKE IT!

Search Directory Indexes

So how do you take advantage of google for this nifty trick? You search the “index of” directories that are generated when there is no index file in the folder. Use the following syntax to do your search:

Replace ‘Font Title’ with the name of the font your searching:
“index of” + “fonts” + “Font Title” -html -htm -php

Let me break down that search query. The first part “index of” will make sure there is a title somewhere in the web document containg this. Most apache directories have this title by default. The “fonts” part searches for a sub folder named fonts. The next part “Font Title” is the part you need to change but DON’T be to specific with this. Its best to use just one keyword here as the results may be limited if you try to many words. The last part removes html, htm, and php files to limit sites which are not true directories.

Still Can’t Find That Font?

If your shidoudaluck there is some alternative keywords you can change to get different results. Instead of using “index of” in the query, try “last modified”, and that still doesn’t work try “parent of”. These are all different headings apache uses when generating directories.

Replace ‘Font Title’ with the name of the font your searching:
“last modified” + “fonts” + “conduit itc” -html -htm -php

And thats it! The same trick can work for a lot more than just fonts. If you want to read more about some google search tricks, check out this page. Again, I do not condone stealing fonts. If you like like it and use it, buy it!
